Mohammed's family

this sunni shia thing. i just do not get it.
reading about the slaughter of hussein and like, 70+ extended family- all descended from the prophet, by folks claiming to follow the prophet. what the hell?
i've never gotten anything but a completely defensive or dismissive answer from moslems on this one
